Sending Patient Records in Akute
Available to customers on our Growth plan or higher only.
You can download or fax a patient’s full medical record directly from their chart in Akute. This includes notes, documents, labs, medications, allergies, and more. Follow the steps below to generate and send a complete chart export.

1. Open the Chart Export Menu
From any patient chart:
Go to the Patient Summary Bar at the top of the chart.
Select the three-dot menu icon.
Choose Print Chart Export (for downloading or faxing the full record).
- Select Fax Chart Export only if you want to fax a limited set of records. For sending the full chart, always use Print Chart Export.
2. Choose What You Want to Export
You’ll see a Chart Export modal with the following options:
Full Chart Export
Selecting Full Chart Export will include:
- Problem List
- Health Maintenance
- History
- Labs
- Notes
- Documents
- Medications
- Allergies
- Vitals
- All other historical chart data
This is the best option when transferring complete medical records.
Filtering Options
You may also export only specific sections:
- Medications
- Notes
- Documents
- Allergies
- Problems
Date Filters (Notes and Documents Only)
If you want to send records from a specific time period:
- You may enter a Start Date and End Date
- Date filtering applies only to Notes and Documents
- Leave the fields blank to export all records for those categories
If you’re transferring the entire record, simply select Full Chart Export and leave all date fields blank.
3. Generate the PDF
Once you’ve selected your export options, behavior will differ depending on whether you choose a Full Chart Export or individual components.
If you select Full Chart Export
- Click Generate PDF
- A notification will confirm that your export has started
- Full chart exports may take several minutes because they include the entire patient record
- You can continue working in Akute while it processes
- When complete, the PDF will automatically appear in the patient’s Documents tab (you’ll also receive a notification)
- From there, you can open the file and fax it directly
If you select specific components instead of Full Chart Export
Examples: Medications only, Notes only, Notes + Documents, Allergies, etc.
- The PDF will generate immediately in your browser
- You will download the file to your computer
- To fax it, you must upload the PDF into the patient’s Documents section first
- Once uploaded, open the file and fax it as usual
4. Access the Completed Chart Export
When the export is ready:
- Click the bell icon (Notifications)
Select the notification titled “Chart export is ready”
This will open the Documents section of the chart
You’ll see a new file named Chart Export – [date] at the top of the list
- It will automatically include a description of “Generated chart export” and be tagged as "Chart Export"
