Setting up phone numbers

Akute offers a built-in phone line that allows you to send and receive SMS (text) messages from within a patient's chart. This significantly simplifies and streamlines text communication with patients who don't want to use the portal or prefer texting.

You can also send and receive calls from the phone number. Akute's built-in phone communication system is what we refer to as a "phone forwarding" solution. Meaning, calls from patients to your Akute virtual number are forwarded to the phone number listed under "Incoming Calls" (as discussed below).

Outgoing calls first call your Settings->Profile phone number. When you answer it then calls the patient automatically, but the patient only sees your Akute virtual number in the caller ID, not your personal number. Thus protecting your personal information. Your user account must be listed under "Outgoing Calls" (as discussed below) in order to be able to make calls from Akute.

Setup

First, navigate to the Settings —> Communication page. Then, select the number you’d like to set up in the dropdown under “Twilio Number” (top of screen).

  • Under “Incoming Calls,” enter the phone number you’d like your calls to ring to.
  • Under “Incoming Texts,” enter a cell phone number you’d like to use to send/receive SMS notifications about these messages.
  • Under “Outgoing Calls,” select the clinician(s) name who will be making calls from this number.
  • Under “Outgoing Texts,” select the clinician(s) name who will use this number to text.

Two important notes:

1. Please make sure you have your personal number set up in Settings -- Profile (next to DOB). This is the number we will route calls through, and where you'll receive SMS notifications of new messages.

2. Please visit our support article for more information on how to register your number with (free!) services that will help mitigate any carrier blocking.
