Updating Default Phone Application

If you are not using Akute's built in phone system and instead are using a 3rd party application like Spruce Health or RingCentral, you can automatically start a call from that preferred application via Akute.

By clicking on the phone icon below the patient's name in the Summary Bar in a chart, your browser will auto open your preferred call application and start a call to that number.


To update your computer's default call application, follow these steps:

On macOS:

  1. Open FaceTime.
  2. Go to the FaceTime menu > Settings (or Preferences).
  3. Under Default for calls, select your preferred app (e.g., Zoom, iPhone, Teams, etc.).

On Windows:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Default Apps.
  2. Scroll down and click Choose defaults by link type.
  3. Scroll to find TEL.
  4. Click it and choose your preferred app (e.g., Skype, Teams, etc.).

This setting determines what happens when Chrome (or other browsers) opens a tel: link — it delegates to macOS or Windows, which then uses your chosen default.
